Filonov - School
Kalevala, Moskau Leningrad, Akademiia, 1933. 330 pp.,
around 60 illustrations in expressionist style. Printed cloth covers,
with decorative expressionist designs in Filonov style. 25, 2 x 18,5
cm. Ref.: Cohen 6/66.
Although Filonov was invited to supervise the illustration
of this translated edition of Finnish poetry in 1931, the book was
not published until two years later, by which time he had been condemned
as decadent. Filonov and his followers had already received violently
negative critical reaction so that, as bowlt has remarked, "it
is a miracle that the Kalevala was ever commisioned and produced."
Filonov's students carried out the design and illustrations of his
book, workling collectively and anonymously. The illustrations are
accommodated to the text both viusally and tonally. Filonov apparently
welcomed the opportunity to work on the Kalevala since it embodied
his own ideas about the emotional relationship of man and nature.
10.300 copies are issued, but very few actually distributed. (Bowlt,
J."Pavel Filonov", RTL, Spring, 1975, pp. 389-90)

of Fantasy, N.Y. 1962, p. 154.
This book is introduced by three prefaces written
by Chernikov (1889-1951) and by an introdution on the problems of
constructivism's relationship to art, written by the critic Erik Gollerbakh.
Chernikov's theories of architecture are set out in this book, which
is not only intrinsically important but also serves as an anticipatory
text of his next (and last) book Arkhitekturnye Fantazii (Architectural
Fantasies). Lenigrad, 1933. Chernikov attributes intuition and fantasy
in creative work. Influcenced by the major art movement in Russia
during the twenties, Chernikov reveals his interest in the bonds among
painting, sculpture and architecturewhich formed an important basis
for Russian art in the years immediately following the Revolution.
